Hedgehope School is a full rural primary school with a passion to inspire students from Years 1-8. We are located in Central Southland on the Winton-Hedgehope Highway, a 20-minute drive from Mataura, Winton or Invercargill. Our beautiful rural setting is located not far from the Community Hall, Rural Fire Brigade and Golf Course. We have three dynamic teachers and classrooms, a library, vast grounds and a school garden with shade house. We offer quality modern teaching and learning programmes while maintaining strong traditional and community values.
Our school vision of ‘Reaching for Greatness’ is guided by our values of Respectful, Enduring, Adventurous, Compassionate and Happy. Our goal is to provide the children of Hedgehope School with the values and life skills necessary to lead full and rewarding lives through high quality learning opportunities, effective teaching and community support.
We offer quality modern teaching and learning practice to engage and excite our inquisitive learners.
Our students are curious and innovative. They engage with real life community opportunities and learning challenges. Also they enjoy a range of play areas including an adventure playground, sandpit, court area, rugby field and a landscaped ‘Treemendous’ area which has a fort, ropes, swings and picnic tables nestled amongst the trees and plantings. We encourage and support our students to be active.
Reaching for Greatness,
Whaia te iti Kahurangi is a shared understanding for our students, staff, parents, BOT and wider community that ensures we have continued success for our students.
Hedgehope School promotes excellence in learning, encourages cooperation and respect and empowers students to create their own pathways to success.
Our values are important for our students, staff, BOT and wider community. They are modelled and lived everyday within the school and wider community.
Our students ‘REACH’ up for Greatness
We respect ourselves. We respect others. We respect our school and our environment. We show respect by speaking and acting with courtesy.
We reach for greatness in everything we do.
We take risks, try new things and are brave.
We work together in learning and play. We fill buckets.
We look for things and people that make us happy.
We understand that learning can be challenging that requires effort. We understand that effort is rewarding and fun. We use the “Learning Pit” and our collaborative ladder.
Nga mihi,
Sue Rogers,
Principal.

Dear Parents/Caregivers
The Ministry has just opened a consultation about an enrolment scheme for Hedgehope School. The enrolment scheme is to assist the Board to manage a situation where there overcrowding or a risk of overcrowding and ensure local students can attend schools in their area.
It’s important that we hear and understand community perspectives before we finalise the enrolment scheme at Hedgehope School, especially geographic, access or community implications.

Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Two reminders/Action items for you.
A friendly prompt to head over to the forms function of the Skooloop app to indicate your transport preferences for the Eastern Sub Zone 2025 Cross Country held at Browns on the 26th May.
This is a gentle reminder that the teachers will be participating in a Maths Professional Learning Development day hosted by the Ministry of Education on June 3rd. Hence, we will use this day as a Teacher-Only Day, and the school will be closed for students.
Have a great week ahead,
Daniel
What a fantastic start to the term it has been! Piwakawaka have had an exciting two weeks settling back into classroom routines and welcoming two new friends—Leo and Dekota—into our learning community.
In Maths, we've explored a variety of concepts tailored to different learning levels. Our younger students have enjoyed making patterns and exploring wholes and halves with our student teacher Ash. Middle learners are practising counting on from the largest number, while our older students are being introduced to simple multiplication and division.
Structured Literacy continues to be a key focus in our daily programme. Each week, your child’s sound focus will be recorded in their little green book, along with a reader to take home. We’re also learning ‘heart words’—those tricky words that can’t be sounded out and need to be remembered by sight. From time to time, your child might bring home a small activity to practise decoding skills connected to their reading book.
In Writing, the children have thoroughly enjoyed recounting their holiday and weekend adventures. We're working at varying levels to develop independence in sounding out words, using heart words, and checking our writing for sense and punctuation.
We’ve also been keeping active with cross country training. The whole school runs a set track, followed by an energetic game that always gets hearts pumping—so much fun that the kids don’t even realise how much fitness they’re building!
This week’s Reading highlight was a story inspired by The Little Red Hen, where a little duck baked a pavlova. Inspired by the story—and with help from our own chickens' eggs—Piwakawaka baked a pavlova too. What a delicious and hands-on way to end the week!
