Welcome to Hedgehope School

Hedgehope School is a full rural primary school with a passion to inspire students from Years 1-8. We are located in Central Southland on the Winton-Hedgehope Highway, a 20-minute drive from Mataura, Winton or Invercargill. Our beautiful rural setting is located not far from the Community Hall, Rural Fire Brigade and Golf Course.  At Hedgehope School, learning is grounded in opportunity, nature and community, guided by our core REACH values — Respect, Endurance, Adventure, Compassion and Happiness. These values shape who we are, how we learn, and how we support one another every day.

We are proud of our outstanding school grounds, which provide rich opportunities for exploration and growth. Our environment includes an orchard, chickens, a thriving plant nursery, hot house, tennis courts, a huge school field, a mountain bike track, a giant sandpit, a newly refurbished playground, workshop and our much-loved Treemendous adventure playground. These spaces are living classrooms where students show Adventure in their learning, Endurance in challenges, and Happiness through active, engaged play.

Inside the classroom, learning is future-focused and well supported. Our senior students benefit from 1-to-1 Apple MacBooks, encouraging creativity, collaboration and independence. Our highly experienced staff lead learning with Respect and Compassion, ensuring every child is known, valued and supported to succeed.

Hedgehope School is strengthened by a caring and connected community. Our active PTA fundraises to support student needs and enrich learning opportunities, while our passionate Board of Trustees provides strong governance and strategic direction, ensuring all students are supported to REACH their full potential.

We are proud to be a top-tier Enviroschool, holding Green-Gold status — the highest level. Through our Forest School programme on Channel Road, students develop Respect and Compassion for the environment by predator trapping and environmental restoration, and they bring this real-world learning back into the classroom.

At Hedgehope School, children are encouraged to REACH for greatness — growing as confident, capable learners in a school where values, nature and community come together.

Throughout the year, the students excel in athletics, swimming, touch rugby, cross country, netball, speech competitions and thrive at school camps, pet day, ski trips, winter sports days, science fair, technology challenges, and much more.

I look forward to getting to know your whole family and supporting you to enjoy our school and community.  Please contact me or any of the staff at school, we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Kind regards,

Daniel Withington

Education Review Office (ERO) report 2026
22 Oct 2026

We are pleased to share that our latest Education Review Office (ERO) report has now been confirmed and is available to read on the Hedgehope School website.

The review, which took place in early June, was a thorough and valuable process that gave us an opportunity to reflect on our school, celebrate what we are doing well and identify where we can continue to grow. We are pleased with the strengths recognised in the report and, equally importantly, the clear direction it provides for our next steps.

A key strength highlighted through the review is the positive and inclusive environment our students experience. The report recognised that:

“Our students experience a positive, inclusive environment and are well supported to engage in school life. School systems effectively promote a sense of belonging, wellbeing and connection for students.”

This is something we are particularly proud of. At Hedgehope School, we want every child to feel that they belong, that they are valued and that they have an important place within our school community. Our REACH values, whānau connections, sporting opportunities, EOTC experiences, clubs and wider school activities all contribute to this sense of belonging and connection.

The report also recognised the support provided for students with additional learning needs:

“Our learners with additional needs are well supported to access learning and achieve goals.”

This reflects the care and commitment of our teaching staff, support staff, whānau and external agencies who work together to support our learners to participate, make progress and experience success.

Another significant strength identified through the review was attendance:

“Attendance is a strength with the school meeting or exceeding Government targets.”

We are very proud of this achievement. Regular attendance is an important foundation for learning, relationships and wellbeing, and this reflects the collective efforts of our students, whānau and staff.

Looking Ahead
A school is always a work in progress, and we see this report as an important scaffold for our next stage of development. It gives us a clear picture of where we are now and, importantly, a clear direction for where we can go next.

One of the key areas we are continuing to develop is how we use assessment information to understand student achievement and progress. This work has been happening alongside significant changes to the New Zealand Curriculum, particularly in English and Mathematics. The timing of the review is also important. The review took place in early June, while we were actively developing and collating achievement and progress information against the new curriculum expectations. We were therefore at an important point of transition as we established new assessment processes and aligned our information with the updated curriculum and progress indicators.

The findings have helped us to clarify this work and reinforce the importance of having consistent, reliable and meaningful information that allows us to understand how every learner is progressing.

We are also continuing to strengthen the way we coordinate and monitor our school improvement work. A massive amount of positive work is happening across Hedgehope School, and our next step is to bring it together through clear priorities, actions, and measures of impact. This will help us to see not only what we are doing, but the difference it is making for our students. These next steps will be incorporated into our strategic planning and ongoing school improvement work. We will continue to monitor our progress and keep our Board, staff, students and whānau informed along the way.

We are always happy to provide further explanation or clarification about the report or our next steps. If you have any questions or would like to discuss anything further, please feel welcome to get in touch.

We look forward to continuing this journey of growth together.

The confirmed report is available to read on the Hedgehope School website.

Home Learning Pouch
22 Oct 2026

Dear Parents,

Just a wee reminder for our Piwakawaka students- can tyou please make sure that your child brings their little pouch to school each day with them. This is vital for our home/school learning and also to keep reading books in good order rather than stuffed in the bottom of the school bags and crushed.

Thanks heaps,
Tab
